Discover how we have helped preserve the Amazon since 1966

For six decades, Castanhal has transformed natural Amazon fibers into yarns, fabrics, and packaging solutions used across a wide range of industries in Brazil and around the world.

A truly Amazonian fiber

Native to the Amazon, malva fiber accounts for most of the raw material used by Castanhal.

Naturally integrated into the Amazon ecosystem, it is cultivated in the region’s river floodplains. Each year, as the waters recede, they leave behind nutrient-rich sediments that naturally fertilize the soil. This process enables cultivation without artificial irrigation, chemical fertilizers, slash-and-burn practices, or deforestation.

With characteristics similar to jute, MALVA plays an important role in strengthening the regional bioeconomy. In the areas where it is cultivated, it provides a valuable source of income for riverside communities, particularly in regions with few scalable economic opportunities.

Bioeconomy in practice

The malva and jute value chain is a successful example of the Amazon socio-bioeconomy in action.

By making use of renewable biological resources, it generates income, strengthens local communities, and creates economic opportunities that contribute to forest conservation.

Producing in harmony with nature has always been part of Castanhal’s history.

A study conducted by SENAI CETIQT concluded that, from cultivation in the Amazon floodplains through the final manufacturing stage, the emissions generated throughout the production process are balanced by carbon captured along the value chain.

For six decades, Castanhal has invested in a business model where, forest, communities, and industry grow together. A journey that begins in the Amazon floodplains and accompanies coffee on its path around the world.
